New Year’s Resolutions for Organization
Having trouble staying organized? You’re not alone! Many people struggle to keep their homes organized for any lengthy period of time. It’s easy to leave a jacket out here, a cup on the counter there, and before you know it, your entire house is a cluttered, disorganized mess. Clutter and mess both lead to frustration and negatively impact your mood (even if you don’t realize it!). So this year, follow these simple resolutions for organization!
Before you set off and start buying new storage bins and shelves, take stock of your home. Odds are good (more than good) that you’ve got some stuff cluttering up your home that you just don’t need. Do a long cleaning session! Go through your closets, basement, attic, garage, shed, and other cluttered areas and get rid of anything you could live without. Consider donating what you can—that sweater you never wear might be just the thing someone else needs.
2. Make It Easier to Keep Clean
If you want to get organized and stay organized (for more than a day or two at a time), then the answer is simple. Make cleaning easier! As a rule of thumb, try to arrange and organize your house in such a way that it never takes more than fifteen minutes or so to tidy up. Keep things in easy-to-remember places and in easy-to-access containers. When you’re not cleaning, try the ‘one hand’ rule: any time you leave a room, look around and see if anything’s not where it should be.
3. Keep a Running Inventory
How many of us go to the store, grab a cart, and realize that we don’t really have any idea what we’re there for? If you’re guilty of losing track of your home inventory, it’s time to consider making a list. Keep a pen and pad of paper somewhere easy to access, or invest in a dry-erase board. Any time you are running low on something, or think of something you need, jot it down! This will make your runs to the store faster and more efficient.
4. Sort Smart, Store Smart
Sorting and storing everything in your house sounds like an enormous chore, and in a few ways it is, but in the end, you’ll have a house that is clean and organized. And, even better, everything will be that much easier to find from now on! Invest in helpful organization tools and dividers for your drawer-space; put your food in clear bins that are color-coded by lid or sorted by shelf.
5. Use the Space You Have or Make More
If you often feel like your home just doesn’t have enough space for everything, even after doing your best to declutter and sort through your belongings, you might be forgetting to utilize all of the space you have (wall shelving, for example, is both efficient and eliminates boring, bare walls).
