Our Tips for Moving in the Winter

There are three main things you need to think about when you’re planning a cold weather move:

1. Getting your new house ready

It’s incredibly important that your new home is ready for you when you move in. That means, before you do anything else, you need to be sure your heat and lights are on and ready for when you arrive. Ideally, you should have all of your utilities set up before you arrive, but in the winter, you need to be absolutely sure the heat is running.

You should also clear the walkways of snow if it has fallen recently so you will have a safe path from the car to the house while bringing in your belongings. If needed, sand and salt the area as an added precaution. It’s also a good idea to make sure the parking area is clear so that you’ll have space available for your car and SMARTBOX containers.

2. Preparing your old house

It’s not just your new home’s walkways you have to worry about, but the old house too. You want a clear path from the house to the car and your portable storage containers. You should also keep sand and salt on hand in case you need them—you can transport these items to your new home just in case you need them then, too.

3. Planning for emergencies

This could be our most important tip for moving in the winter: plan for emergencies! Winter weather can strike at any time, and a snow storm can really set you back if you’re not prepared. You should have a back-up plan in case you need to reschedule your move, including short-term accommodations and more.

Make sure to plan your travel route carefully and ensure that all the roads will be open in the event of a storm. You should also have your car serviced and prepared for winter, including topping off fluids, having the brakes checked, and more. Don’t forget to also carry emergency contact information with you, such as the phone number for roadside assistance.
